My name is Pete Manuel and I am a member of Manly Life Saving club.
I am a very keen but novice board user who has only been using a board since I joined the club 2 years ago. As I am now 46 I clearly have a lot of time to make up on the tremendous number of experienced boarders around the club and on the beach.
I am a massive fan on of the soft board for the following reasons:
- I find the guide ropes very easy to access - very important
when you are learning!
- The "slippery" / easy slide foam pads make it very easy to
move up and down the board
- The overall feel of the board is great on well used knees and
body parts like mine :)
- I find the board performs well in and out of the surf.
It does seem that the soft boards are a little slower / harder to cut through the water than the traditional hard boards. Not sure, but seems that they are sitting a little lower in the water which creates more of a drag. Conversely, I actually find them easier to move out through the bigger surf but this is probably because the board is again a little lower in the water.
